Northern Ontario Curling Team-Paticipating in the Canadian Police Curling Championships

Commissioned Officers Association | March 11, 2015

This news story is  from Jim Szarka, Superintendent, North East Ontario Region Headquarters, about Team Mitchell who will be representing Northern Ontario this year at the Canadian Police Curling Championships. This event is being held March 21-28 in Sudbury. One of the teams sponsors is the COA.  Photos of the team, and of the team jackets and crests are attached. We wish you well in Sudbury and will be following the action.

The team entered the North Ontario Competitive Police Curling Championships this year.  We travelled to Timmins and beat the 5 time North Ontario Champions at their home curling rink the McIntyre Curling Club.  We will now advance to the Canadian Championships which are being hosted in Sudbury.     Our team is all from the North Bay and surrounding area.

Skip –  Constable Steve Mitchell – Anishinabek Police and North Bay resident.

Vice –  Superintendent  Jim Szarka – OPP North East Region Headquarters, North Bay resident

2nd –   Provincial Constable Dave Lawes OPP Almaguin Highland.

Lead –  Constable Tyeler Commanda Anishinabek Police – Nipissing  FN Resident

In addition to residing locally , the team has practiced (and will continue to practice)  at both the North Bay Granit Club and Powassanrling clubs in preparation for the events.  Attached are the two websites about the events.  The North Ontario Curling association site being updated with our win.  The second link is the upcoming Canadian Championships March 21-28.  The format is very similar to the Briar 12 teams from across Canada and an 11 game round robin.  We play Team Canada, the defending Champions in our first game!!.

We are recognized as Northern Ontario  Provincial Champions for Police curling and will be wearing the Northern Ontario Curling Association (NOCA)  colors  and official emblem.  This is the 60th anniversary of the Canadians and seeing as it is in Sudbury, I believe there will be higher than normal media coverage.    Lastly I think having both our Police Services represented on this team is representative of the great relationships we have both working and now in sporting events.
